The French Revolution: Méribel DH qualifying

The small town of Méribel is well used to seeing major sporting events, such as the 1992 Winter Olympics, roll in and shatter the alpine tranquility that largely prevails. But the final race of the 2014 UCI World Cup season is proving to be a tapestry of intrigue and action unlike it's ever seen before.

This mountain is, like most massive, high altitude crags of rock, pretty unforgiving. Both the elite men and women's title races have three main protagonists gunning for the ever-illusive points. Risking vital tenths against jagged stones and slick roots is never easy but when there's a title up for grabs, the odds intensify even further and shocks can happen...

Last Chance to Slash: Méribel DH Practice Video

The love currently being directed at the Méribel DH track flowing forth from various social media outlets is threatening to melt our internet connection. The UCI World Cup riders can't get enough of the French hillside. It's an all natural mix of rock, root and piste.

Unlike the wide open, relatively single-lined Windham this is a true thinkers track and will reward those who can string it all together amidst the loam, mud and grass.

Loïc Bruni previews the new Méribel DH track

When the beeps start in the hut 550 metres above the no-doubt-packed finish arena on Saturday we will be on final approach to finding out the destination of the 2014 UCI World Cup overall titles.

That said, there's still a race to win for the riders not necessarily in the hunt for overall honours. One of the most popular will be the current French national champion at his home round, Loïc Bruni.

He very kindly offered to show us down what has become one of the most well-received tracks to debut on the calendar in a long time.

There is a lot of excitement regarding the all-new UCI World Cup DH track here in Méribel, France. It's a combination of big rock and root sections and flat-out ski piste descending.

So what better way to calm everyone's nerves than to send a screaming Swiss down the track to provide his own, sketchy take on things?! Over to you, Claudio...
